Could Stress Be Affecting Your Weight-Loss Journey? What I’m Learning Since Coming Home
πΏ STRESS LESS, RELEASE MORE
Let's get a little personal!
After spending 2½ months on the road exploring new places, walking beaches, visiting state parks, and enjoying so much time outdoors, I arrived home and discovered I'd gained 6 pounds.
Six pounds! π³
Naturally, I started asking myself…
What changed?
Was it my stress level? My environment? My daily routine? My sleep? My eating habits?
During my road trip, I was walking more, spending less time in front of a screen, exploring new places, and experiencing something different almost every day.
Now I'm home, back to familiar routines, responsibilities, and surroundings.
I don't know exactly what contributed to the change on the scale. Weight can fluctuate for many reasons, including changes in fluid levels, eating patterns, activity, and routine. Six pounds doesn't automatically mean six pounds of body fat.
But the experience got me thinking about something we don't always consider when working toward a healthier weight:
π How much does the way we LIVE affect our ability to maintain healthy habits?
We often focus on calories, protein, exercise, and the number on the scale. Those things can matter, but they aren't the whole picture.
Stress, sleep, emotions, and our environment can also influence our appetite, cravings, energy, and motivation to move.
Sometimes, the answer isn't to push harder or become more restrictive. Sometimes, it's to step back and look at what our everyday lives are asking of us.
So, what can we do about it?
π» 7 SIMPLE WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS WHILE WORKING ON YOUR WEIGHT
π¬️ 1. Take a breathing break.
When you feel overwhelmed, pause for a minute or two. Relax your shoulders and breathe slowly and comfortably. You don't have to solve everything in this moment.
Sometimes, a small pause is enough to help you approach the next task with a little more calm.
πΆ♀️ 2. Get outside.
Take a 10-minute walk, sit in the sunshine, or spend a little time in your garden.
Gentle movement and time in nature can support your mood and give you a refreshing break from the demands of the day.
You don't need an elaborate workout or an entire afternoon free. Start with what you have.
π΄ 3. Make sleep a priority.
Try to keep a fairly consistent bedtime, create a relaxing evening routine, and give yourself permission to rest.
Poor sleep can affect hunger, cravings, energy, and motivation. Rest isn't laziness. It's part of taking care of yourself.
π₯ 4. Don't let stress dictate your eating.
When you feel the urge to snack, pause and ask yourself, “Am I hungry, or am I looking for comfort, distraction, or a break?”
If you're hungry, eat. If you're stressed, consider what else might help you feel supported.
And if you do eat for comfort sometimes, don't add guilt to the mix. Notice what happened, learn from it, and move forward with kindness.
π΅ 5. Create a calmer environment.
Step away from the news, social media, clutter, or whatever is adding unnecessary pressure.
Put on some music, tidy one small space, spend time outdoors, or create a quiet corner where you can breathe.
You may not be able to change every stressful situation, but you can sometimes change how much extra noise you allow into your day.
❤️ 6. Stay connected.
Call a friend, share a laugh, spend time with someone who lifts you up, or ask for support when you need it.
We weren't meant to carry everything alone. Connection, laughter, and feeling understood can make difficult days feel a little lighter.
πΏ 7. Stop demanding perfection from yourself.
One meal, one difficult day, or one change on the scale doesn't define your progress.
You don't have to start over every Monday or wait until everything is perfect to make a helpful choice.
Focus on your next step instead of criticizing your last one.
Progress comes from the choices you keep returning to, not from getting everything right every single day.
✨ MY PERSONAL CHALLENGE
As I settle back into life at home, I'm asking myself a different question.
Instead of focusing only on those six pounds, how can I bring more of the things I loved about my road trip into my everyday life?
More outdoor adventures.
More movement.
More exploration.
More joy.
Less time sitting, worrying, and thinking about what I should be doing.
I want to keep discovering new places, trying new things, and making room for experiences that remind me how much there is to enjoy.
I'm choosing curiosity over criticism and progress over perfection.
And I'm reminding myself that wellness isn't just about a number on the scale. It's also about having the energy to do the things I love, feeling good in my body, and building habits I can sustain for the long term.
Because the goal isn't simply to weigh less.
It's to feel better, live fully, and create a life you genuinely enjoy living.
