The Peaks, The Valleys & Everything In Between
Life is full of peaks and valleys.
Always has been. Always will be.
There are seasons when everything seems to be flowing. Things fall into place. We feel confident, energized and excited about what's ahead.
And then there are the valleys.
The delays.
The unexpected changes.
The challenges we didn't ask for.
The moments when we're not sure what's next or why something is happening the way it is.
For a long time, I think many of us are taught to look at the valleys as something we need to get through as quickly as possible.
Get back to the peak.
Get back to normal.
Get back to where everything feels comfortable.
But I'm learning to see things differently.
What if the valley has something to teach us?
I'm realizing that I can't always control what happens in my life.
But I can choose how I respond to it.
And that changes everything.
Changing your mindset doesn't mean pretending that difficult things aren't difficult.
It doesn't mean putting a positive spin on something painful or telling yourself that everything happens for a reason.
Sometimes life simply brings us things we wouldn't have chosen.
But even then, we can ask:
What can I learn here?
How can I grow from this?
Where can I find joy today?
What is this teaching me about myself?
Those questions shift something inside us.
I choose joy.
One of the choices I'm making in this season of my life is to seek joy in all things.
Not because everything is joyful.
Because it isn't.
But because I don't want to miss the joy that is available simply because something didn't go according to plan.
I want to notice the little moments.
The laughter.
The beauty.
The unexpected adventures.
The people who cross my path.
The things I once thought I couldn't do.
The moments that stretch me.
Even the things that challenge me can become part of a bigger story.
And I've learned that I don't have to understand everything before I move forward.
Sometimes I simply have to trust.
Leaning into faith
My faith has become a bigger part of how I navigate the unknown.
There are times when there is a delay.
A closed door.
A change of plans.
A challenge I didn't see coming.
And I don't always understand why.
But I'm learning to lean into God instead of feeling like I have to figure everything out myself.
I don't need to know every step.
I can take the next one.
I can have faith in the middle of the uncertainty.
And maybe that's part of growing—not having all the answers, but becoming more comfortable with not having them.
Change doesn't have to be difficult
I used to think change had to be hard.
That growth meant pushing, forcing and fixing.
But I'm starting to see that change can also be natural.
Sometimes it's simply becoming aware of something that no longer fits.
Sometimes it's releasing an old way of thinking.
Sometimes it's trying something new.
Sometimes it's deciding that the way you've always done something isn't the way you want to continue doing it.
And sometimes change happens because we're finally ready to stop playing small.
I'm learning that I can change without criticizing the woman I was.
I can appreciate where I've been while still being excited about where I'm going.
That's an important distinction.
I don't have to hate who I was to love who I'm becoming.
Giving ourselves—and others—grace
Another lesson I'm learning is to appreciate imperfections.
My own included.
We're all flawed.
We all have things we're working on.
We all have moments when we don't respond the way we'd hoped.
We all have our own stories, experiences and struggles that shape us.
And God created each of us uniquely.
So perhaps we don't need to spend so much energy trying to make ourselves—or everyone else—perfect.
Maybe we can give ourselves a little more grace.
And extend some of that grace to the people around us.
That doesn't mean ignoring unhealthy behaviour or abandoning boundaries.
It means remembering that imperfection is part of being human.
Maybe the valley isn't the problem
The more I live, the more I'm realizing that the goal isn't to create a life without valleys.
That's impossible.
The goal is to learn how to walk through them differently.
With faith.
With grace.
With curiosity.
With gratitude.
With a willingness to learn.
And with the decision to keep looking for joy.
Because the peaks are wonderful.
But some of the deepest growth can happen in the valleys.
And sometimes the change we resist becomes the change that opens something new.
So today, wherever you find yourself—in a peak, a valley or somewhere in between—remember this:
You don't have to wait for life to be perfect to enjoy it.
You don't have to understand everything to have faith.
You don't have to be perfect to be worthy of love and appreciation.
And you don't have to stay the same just because you've always been that way.
You get to grow.
You get to change.
You get to learn.
You get to become.
And you get to choose joy along the way.
Because I don't want to wait for some perfect someday.
I want to live it all.
The peaks.
The valleys.
The changes.
The challenges.
The growth.
The joy.
And everything in between.
