THE SPACE BETWEEN KNOWING AND TRUSTING
A Functional Wellness Perspective on Stress, Uncertainty, and Nervous System Health
Lately I’ve been realizing something about life.
So much of it is lived in the space between knowing and not knowing.
Between prayer and answer.
Between planting and harvest.
Between where we are and where we hope to be.
From a functional wellness perspective, this “in-between space” is more than just emotional—it’s physiological.
Uncertainty is one of the most overlooked sources of chronic stress in the body.
It doesn’t just affect thoughts.
It impacts the nervous system, hormones, sleep quality, digestion, energy, and overall resilience.
And yet most people don’t recognize it as stress.
We just call it “life.”
The stress of not knowing
If I’m honest, I don’t always like that space.
I like clarity.
I like plans.
I like knowing where I’m headed and how things will unfold.
But life rarely offers that kind of certainty.
Instead, it often asks us to move forward before we can see the whole path.
To trust before we have proof.
To continue taking small steps without knowing exactly where they will lead.
From a nervous system standpoint, this state of “unknown” can keep the body in a low-grade stress response.
Not always dramatic.
But ongoing.
Subtle.
Cumulative.
And over time, this can contribute to:
fatigue
poor sleep
anxiety or overthinking
hormonal imbalance
inflammation in the body
reduced capacity to recover
This is why stress management is not just emotional—it is functional wellness.
Why we crave certainty
For a long time, I believed peace would come when I finally had all the answers.
When the situation resolved.
When the outcome became clear.
When uncertainty disappeared.
But what I’ve learned is that waiting for certainty often keeps the body in a prolonged state of tension.
The nervous system stays in “search mode,” constantly scanning for resolution.
And in that state, we don’t fully rest, recover, or regulate.
Functional wellness and the nervous system
Functional wellness teaches us that the body is always responding to cues—internal and external.
And one of the strongest cues is perceived safety.
When we feel safe:
digestion improves
sleep deepens
energy stabilizes
hormones regulate more effectively
inflammation decreases
When we feel unsafe or uncertain for long periods:
cortisol stays elevated
recovery slows down
cravings increase
energy becomes inconsistent
resilience decreases
This is why emotional and spiritual stress cannot be separated from physical health.
They are interconnected systems.
Learning to live in the in-between
Lately I’ve been wondering if peace comes from something else entirely.
What if peace isn’t found in certainty?
What if it’s found in regulation?
In learning how to support the body while we live in uncertainty.
Because the truth is, uncertainty is part of being human.
There will always be things we cannot predict.
Questions we cannot answer.
Outcomes we cannot control.
And yet life continues to invite us forward.
Not with guarantees.
But with opportunities to build resilience.
To support our nervous system.
To create stability within ourselves, even when life feels uncertain externally.
What supporting yourself actually looks like
This is where functional wellness becomes practical.
Supporting your body in seasons of uncertainty can look like:
consistent hydration
nutrient-dense meals
adequate protein and minerals
daily movement (walking, strength, mobility)
reducing inflammatory stressors
prioritizing sleep and recovery
nervous system regulation (breath, rest, stillness)
spiritual grounding or mindfulness practices
These are not “extras.”
They are foundational inputs for resilience.
Because the body cannot thrive in chronic stress without support.
The shift that changes everything
I think this is especially true when we’re working toward something meaningful.
Improving our health.
Growing a business.
Building relationships.
Pursuing purpose.
Deepening our faith.
There is often a season where the results are not yet visible.
The harvest has not yet arrived.
The answers have not yet appeared.
And yet we continue.
Not because we are certain.
But because we are supported.
Supported by habits.
Supported by routines.
Supported by systems that stabilize the body while life unfolds.
Holding hope while regulating stress
I’ve come to believe that maturity is not the absence of uncertainty.
It is learning how to hold hope and regulate stress at the same time.
To continue moving forward without needing every answer.
To support the body even while the mind is unsure.
To create internal stability when external circumstances feel unclear.
Because the goal of wellness is not to eliminate uncertainty.
It is to increase capacity within it.
Final reflection
That kind of peace feels different.
It’s quieter.
Less about control.
More about support.
Less about certainty.
More about regulation.
And perhaps that’s one of the most important shifts in functional wellness.
Not removing uncertainty from life.
But learning how to keep the body supported while we live inside it.
One day.
One breath.
One choice at a time. 🌿
